Mattie Ruth Scott

Mattie Ruth Scott, 85, daughter of John and Fleta Scott, passed away Friday, September 9, 2016 at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro.

Ms. Scott was born in Stilson, Ga on February 17, 1931, and lived in the Savannah area for many years before returning to Bulloch County in 1976.  She was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church where she participated in many church activities.  Ms. Scott was a 1948 graduate of Stilson High School. She continued her education, in the nursing field, by attending and graduating from St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in 1951 alongside some of her closest friends including, Whit Parrish, Baxter Donaldson, and Emily “Coody” Coody.  She worked for over sixty years as a registered nurse, having worked for Memorial Hospital, Dr. Grant W. Goldenstar in Savannah, and then went on to work at Bulloch Memorial Hospital along with several Nursing Home facilities in the Statesboro area.  She was a very avid baseball and football fan.  She was a recipient the Dean Day Smith for Mankind Award in 1993.  In addition to her parents, she preceded in death by her brother, Waldo Scott,  her sister, Johnnie Ola Higgley and two nieces Lisa Higgly and Patty Scott.

Surviving are her caregivers, Elder Mike and Kathy Newman of Metter and Tim and Esther Newman of Register; and several nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 o’clock Monday at Olive Branch Baptist Church in Bryan County.

The funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 o’clock at Olive Branch Baptist Church with Elder Mike Newman and Rev. Clint Sullens officiating.  The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.

Burial will follow in the Ash Branch Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
