Huey Higgs Obituary

Huey Higgs of Metter, died late Tuesday, March 23, 2020 at Emory Hospital in Atlanta.

Huey was born on September 6, 1953 to loving parents Hubert and Hazel (Powell)Higgs in Chillicothe, Ohio. His dad was an iron worker, his mom went for a visit and had Huey there. He grew up in Collins Ga surrounded by grandmas, aunts, uncles and cousins with one very special cousin Loyette Higgs Beard whom he went on many adventures with as children. Huey was spoiled and cherished by his family!!! He also learned at a young age how to make extra money by running shine for the locals. His momma tried but at 17 he was a handful and she signed the paperwork for him to enlist in the navy.  He was an only child and they weren’t drafted back then. Thus, his worldly travels began. He would say I’ve been to twenty-one foreign countries and five continents. He served proudly on the USS Mobile AKA 115, he was a Coxswain and to this day the best damn sea captain I know.  He did 2 tours in Vietnam and was stationed on a PT boat patrol and a Medevac ship. He never regretted his service to his country even when faced with disease that   Agent Orange brought to his body. He lived his life on his on terms, the feds were always trying to lock him up for some stupid reason and did. They never broke his spirit or his determination he made moon shine up to his dying day. He came home from Vietnam and used his GI bill for school and became a mechanic, he loved the car industry and excelled at it, managing service departments for many years and running his own shop. He was one hell of a horse trainer and loved pulling up to the track with a trailer full of stone-cold runners and tell em all we going to punish y’all today. Most trainers avoided any race he had a horse running in. Good times at the track with good friends like Kenny Register, Jack Murray, Louis Beasley, Leon Taylor, Speedy Barrett, John (killer) Hall and good buddy Kenny Ceaser!! The last trips he made to the Ellore trials and Kingstree trails he won every race his horses entered!!!

He is survived by his loving wife Faye Holloway and loving children Heather, Carmen and Haley Higgs of Vidalia and Lorne Wendel of Metter. He is preceded in death by a daughter Lyle Wendel. Grandchildren River and Canyon Davis of Waycross and Braleigh, Riley Zoey, Kaleigh Higgs and Laydon and Micah Taylor of Vidalia. Mother in love Fannie Holloway sister in love June Holloway and brother in laws Joey and Monice, Jerry and Michelle Holloway.  He was a loving husband and father!! Huey was the very best daddy ever, his love for his family was infinite. He loved to fix broken people.  He loved playing with his grandchildren and fishing with his wife at Spellman’s Bluff.  He will forever remain in our hearts with so much admiration and love!!

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
