Walter Dan Henderson Obituary

Walter Dan Henderson, 73 of Metter passed away on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at Candler County Hospital after a lengthy illness. He lived in Metter, Georgia all of his life, and was currently residing in his boyhood home. He was a Metter High School Class of 1966 graduate and attended Andrew College and Georgia Southern College. Dan’s high school classmates were very special to him and he always enjoyed class reunions or just being together with them. Dan was a veteran having served with the Georgia Army National Guard.

Dan was a True Blue Georgia Southern Eagles fan, dating back to when his uncle, Zach Henderson was president of the college. He continued supporting his Eagles until health issues prohibited him from attending any games. Dan was also a devoted supporter of his Metter Tiger family. With photography being his hobby, Dan could be found on the sidelines many Friday nights, cheering on and photographing his Tigers.

In his early work career, Dan worked at Metter Lumber, where his mother was employed, and later worked at Argo Mills, an apparel plant in Metter. He was the purchasing agent for the plant, but also helped with several other positions while there. Upon closure of the plant, Dan went into business for himself, selling and installing satellite systems, under the name of Southern Satellite Systems. Dan also worked for a period of time, for Metter Ford transporting vehicles from one dealership to another. There he met and developed good working relationships with several of the drivers and staff. Presently, Dan was working part-time for Metter Advertiser and Metter Graphics delivering goods created and sold by the business. He thoroughly enjoyed his work, as he got to work with longtime friend, Carvy Snell, becoming part of the Metter Advertiser, Metter Graphics family.

Dan was a 50 year member of Metter United Methodist Church and prided himself on never missing a church service until health issues prevented him from attending. Dan served faithfully as the sound engineer for their services or events being held at the church, also keeping up with each service virtually when he could no longer attend in person. He was also a member of the church praise band, Jericho Road, who performed at his church and surrounding churches, as well as Another Bloomin’ Festival.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents, W.A. (Red) and Dell Henderson.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Angela Henderson; his daughter, Janie Henderson (Alan Barajas) of Duluth; and several cousins, locally, Joe Deloach, Nancy Norton and Polly Porter.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at 11 a.m. at Metter United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m.-until 10:30 a.m. at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in Lake Cemetery.  Honorary Pallbearers will be the Class of 1966 and employees of The Metter Advertiser and Metter Graphics.
