Sidney "Charles" Lanier Obituary

Sidney Charles Lanier of Metter died peacefully, Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. 

Charles was born on July 25, 1936 in Candler County to Sidney “Reginald” and Mildred (Bird) Lanier.  Charles grew up on the family farm in the Union Community.  Charles attended Metter First Baptist Church and later attended Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church.  He graduated from Metter High School in 1954, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, and the University of Georgia in 1960.  At the University of Georgia, he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity.  After receiving his agricultural degree from the University of Georgia, he returned home to the family farm where he lived his entire life. Charles farmed the family farm for forty years until his health began to decline. He was the recipient of the Ogeechee River Soil and Water Conservationist of the Year Award in 1970 and the Baldwin Master Farmer Award in 1971. Charles was a member of the GFA Peanut Board, a charter member of the Candler County Young Farmers Association for which he served for more than forty years, Pineland Telephone Board and the Candler County ASCS County Committee.  He enjoyed UGA football, hunting, and fishing. He loved to visit his house at Shellman’s Bluff to fish and fellowship with friends and family. He loved to entertain friends and family at his clubhouse on the farm.  Charles was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-eight years, Nancy Durden Lanier.

Charles is survived by three sons;  Sidney (Bonnie) Lanier, Stanley (Connie) Lanier, Stevie (Dennie Kay) Lanier; six grandchildren, Luke (Susannah) Lanier, Leah (Zac) Frye, Adrienne (Josh) Vining, Abbey Lanier, Rhett Lanier, and Haley Lanier; five great grandchildren, Ansley, Avery, Aubrey, Charlie, and Emmett; two siblings, Jerry (Phebia) Lanier and Martha (J.L.) Ward; two brother-in-laws, Jimmy (Marge) Durden and Johnny (Dot) Durden; several nieces and nephews including Lanier Ward, Kathi Mentzer, Reggie (Mandy) Lanier, and Sonya (Kyle) Durrence; and special friends Berry Donaldson and Malcolm Flynt.

 The funeral will be held Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church at 3 o’clock in the afternoon with Elder Sam Bowen officiating and Elder Mike Newman assisting.

Visitation will be held from 2 until 3 o’clock at Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church on Sunday, January 20, 2019.

Pallbearers will be Danny Durden, Randy Durden, Morgan Trapnell, Lanier Ward, Reggie Lanier, J.L. Ward, Homer Bell, and Johnny Durden.

Interment will be in Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
