Surrounded by love, Hubert Crooms, a Candler County native and lifelong resident, joined his Savior, wife, Louise Crooms, earthly parents, and 10 brothers and sisters in Heaven, Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the age of 92. The longest living family member, Hubert and his twin Herbert were the youngest surviving children of Tom Crooms and Rosa Lee Payne Crooms. Hubert was born on December 31, 1932, and Herbert was born just after midnight on January 1, 1933, which became somewhat of a family joke – identical twins born a year apart. December 31st became their official birthdate for the remainder of their years together, and it was a life filled with jokes, laughs, fun, and sometimes mischief.
Hubert’s early years were filled with life on the farm and family. He was a Korean War era veteran that the military kept stateside because of his two other brothers away at war. After his military service, he returned home to a life on the farm in the Aline community. Hubert chose to leave the farm fields for an hourly wage, after time with Greene Grocery Company in Metter, Hubert worked with Pineland Telephone Cooperative in Metter. Hubert had a happy career at Pineland Telephone, spending time working at the substations, the line crew and finally as a service technician, retiring at the age of 62. Hubert made lifelong friends with the guys at the “Pole Yard.” Also, during these years, Hubert and Herbert enjoyed a shared hobby for working on lawn mowers. Herbert’s backyard became the gathering place for friends and neighbors from across Metter-Candler and the surrounding area, and while they fixed or overhauled untold numbers of lawn mowers, more laughs and jokes were shared that were lawn mowers fixed.
Through these years, Sunday afternoons and on every occasion possible, Hubert, Herbert, Joe Pittman, Billy Bird, and Billy Wright could be found at Willow Lake sharing a round of golf and laughter. The bond that Hubert shared with his golfing buddies was a joyful time in his life.
Hubert did not enjoy retirement and did not stay retired long. This led to him finding a new calling in life with his nephew at Dean’s Golf Carts. He found great joy in working on golf carts, spending time with old friends, and meeting and becoming friends with new customers.
Hubert attended Cedar Street Baptist Church and was a member of more than 40 years. He is survived by his son, Randy Crooms (Susan) of Metter, 6 grandchildren, Matt Crooms, Morgan McDaniel (Justin), Macy Reed (Casey), each of Waynesboro, Georgia. Sarah Crooms (Caleb), Brian Crooms, and Sophia Crooms, each of Metter, along with 6 great-grandchildren.
