Kennedy Funeral Homes announces the death of Sylvia Corbitt Hooks, age 82, of Swainsboro, GA on Monday, May 4, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah, GA.
The family will have visitation on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, from 5:00pm till 7:00pm at Hooks Chapel - Kennedy Funeral Home at 223 South Broad Street Metter, GA 30439. Funeral Service will be Thursday, May 7, at 11:00am at Hooks Chapel – Kennedy Funeral Home with Interment to follow at New Hope Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Lexsy, GA with Elder Craig Lanier and Elder Will Martin officiating.
Pallbearers will be nephews: Jones Hooks, Dr. Mack Bird, and Al Mauldin as well as Andy Dixon, Ed Daniels, and Shannon Mason.
Sylvia was the daughter of Lige Alston and Eloise Olive Corbitt. She was born in Brunswick, GA, grew up in Willacoochee, GA and her family moved to Nashville, GA where she graduated from Berrien County High School. Sylvia attended Young Harris College in North Georgia and then pursued X-Ray Technician training in Macon, GA. In 1963, Sylvia married Donald Jordan Hooks of Swainsboro, GA. They spent 50 years together before Donald’s passing in 2013. Sylvia supported the family businesses of Hooks Milling Company and Hooks Secure Storage, was a member of New Hope Primitive Baptist Church, and above all a dedicated Mother. Whether you knew her by “Miss Sylvia” or “Maw Maw,” she made a lasting impression on all she met and will be remembered for her captivating personality.
She is preceded in death by her brother Joe Robert Corbitt (1976), mother Eloise Olive Corbitt (1994), father Lige Alston Corbitt (2003), husband Donald Jordan Hooks (2013), and sister Teena Corbitt Mauldin (2020). She is survived by three daughters: Donna Hooks Turner (Mark Turner) of Evans, GA, Missy Hooks Sennowitz of Athens, GA, and Starr Hooks Horn (Dr. Thomas Horn) of Savannah, GA; one son: Donald Jordan “Judd” Hooks Jr of Atlanta, GA; one brother: Lige “Boots” Corbitt III of Dublin, GA; one sister: Theresa Lovein of Nashville, GA; 7 grandchildren: Stephen Turner (Sally), Wesley Turner (Caroline), Jordan Sennowitz, Anna Sennowtiz, Lexi Sennowitz, Skye Horn, and Logan Horn; 4 great-grandchildren: Layne Turner, Sam Turner, Eloise Turner, and Margot Turner; 9 nephews and 9 nieces.
