George W. McGowan Obituary

George W.  McGowan, 91, of Metter, died Monday, March 30, 2020 at his residence under the care of Hospice and his family.

Mr. McGowan was born in Metter and lived in the area all of his life.  He was a member of Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church, was a 1946 graduate of Metter High School, and attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.  Mr. McGowan worked for the United States Soil Conservation Service for over thirty years and was the District Supervisor for the Georgia Soil and Conservation Commission.  He was awarded the Man of the Year Award by the Georgia Soil and Conservation Commission in 1986 and was a charter member of the Candler County Young Farmers.  Mr. McGowan served on the Candler County Hospital Authority and the Candler County Farm Bureau Board.  He was a member of the Metter Lyons Club for which he held several offices and was known for his many hobbies and ventures. Mr. McGowan was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-four years, Mary Ann McNair McGowan, his parents, J.W. and Ethel Akins McGowan, four brothers, Wilmer McGowan, Delma McGowan, John Edwin McGowan (Virginia), and Robert Louis McGowan (Grace) , and one sister, Lucille Donaldson (J.E.).

Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Lori McGowan of Metter; two daughters and sons-in-law, Violet and Barry Coleman of Vidalia and Angie and Brad Franklin of Metter; six grandchildren, Jennifer Coleman, Barry Coleman, II (Caroline), Marlie McGowan, Matt McGowan (Jessica), Katie Cliett (Edward), and Macie Franklin; six great-grandchildren, Hunter Coleman, Whitley Coleman, Sidney Rogers, Jase McGowan, Saylor McGowan and Ben Cliett,; three sisters-in-law, Betty McNair, Jane Ellen Durden, and Peggy McGowan; and several nieces and nephews.

The graveside service will be held at 3 o’clock in the afternoon, Wednesday, April 1, 2020 at Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery located at 59138 Rosemary Church Road Metter, GA 30439.  All social distancing and CDC requirements will be in place.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Rosemary Church 60593 GA. Hwy 121 North Metter, Ga 30439.
