Jan H. Powell

JAN H. POWELL, born February 3, 1960, in Collins, Georgia, passed into eternal rest on January 4, 2020, in New Port Richey, Florida.
Jan grew up in Tattnall County, Georgia, and was a 1978 graduate of Reidsville High School.
He proudly served in the United States Army 1984-1989, earning many awards, and receiving an Honorable Discharge.

Jan was employed with BellSouth/AT&T Communications in Atlanta, Georgia, residing in Atlanta, and AT&T Orlando, Florida, while residing in Sanford, Florida.
After employment with AT&T Communications, Jan successfully completed Paul Mitchell School of Cosmetology in Orlando, Florida and enjoyed working as a hair stylist before becoming ill.

Jan loved his family and treasured time spent with them, especially his grandparents, Carlton and Yuba Brown, Metter, Georgia; Clarence and Zetta Powell, Collins, Georgia. He was an avid reader, doing in-depth study of the Bible. Also among his many interests were history, firearms, sailing and music. As a self-taught musician Jan played with different groups around where he resided, was a great animal lover; his cats and dogs loved him in return.

Surviving Jan are his wife, Judy L. Powell, New Port Richey, Florida; a step-daughter Kristin Rutkowski, Orlando, Florida, who brought a new dimension and joy to his life as he never had children of his own; his mother, Ann Rewis, Saint Simons Island, Georgia; two sisters, Karla Sasser, Rincon, Georgia; and Celeste R. (David) Collins, Travelers’ Rest, South Carolina; nieces Megan and Paige, nephew Adam; an uncle and an aunt and cousins.
Jan was preceded in death by his father, Jan H. Powell, Sr., and his brother, Nathan Alan Powell.

A Celebration of Life and Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. January 25, 2020, at Lake Primitive Baptist Church, Metter, Georgia, with visitation following.
Interment will be in Lake Church Cemetery.
