June Collins Coursey Obituary

June Collins Coursey, age 79, of Metter died Wednesday, April 6, 2022 at her home. June was born in Tattnall County and moved to Metter at an early age. A 1960 Metter High School graduate, she was the widow of Joseph “Joe” Lee Coursey.  Together, they owned and operated Thriftway Food Store in Metter for 40 years. After Joe’s death, June began working in 2004 as a funeral assistant for Kennedy Funeral Homes. She was a person that would do anything asked of her.  She was proficient in her bookkeeping skills, arranging flowers and greeting people as she knew almost everyone.

June became a member of the Metter First Baptist Church in 1972. Serving as treasurer for many years, June was a good steward of the church’s finances. She taught Sunday school to all ages from children to adults. Before the pandemic, she would arrive at church early every Sunday morning to cook breakfast for the youth or any adult that wanted to eat. June was never aware of the impact she had on the youth of Metter First Baptist Church with her Christ like devotion to her church over the past 20 years. On a lighter note, she made the best pecan pies ever and loved sharing them with her church family and friends.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband, were her parents, John Hilton Collins and Louella Lynn Collins; a brother, Herbert Collins and a sister, Hilda Edgil.

Survivors are a son, Joseph Lee Coursey, III “Colt” of Reynolds; a daughter, Heather C. Donaldson (Jim) of Metter; a brother and sister-in-law; Dr. Larry and Mary Collins; six sisters, Jean Paris, Elva Leverett, Lamana Balboni, Lynn Matthews, Judith Collins and Dianne Burkett and a brother-in-law, Barry Burkett; three grandchildren, Megan C. Murray (Matt), Dylan Holloway (Coty) and Gatlin Holloway (Taylor); three great grandchildren, Major Lee Murray, McKenzie Grace Murray, and Sawyer Kate Holloway.

Graveside funeral services will be private.

Remembrances may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, of Metter is in charge of arrangements.
